Our personal injury lawyers have a question and answer session with League of American Bicyclists “League Certified Instructor” and previous Education Director of the New York Bicycling Coalition, Ken Crandall. #2

LSL:

If I’m a driver and I see a bicyclist on the road, what would you want going through my head when I see you?

Ken:
Be patient, give them space.

There is a prevailing attitude on the road that bicyclists are slowing motorists down, and that they are impeding traffic and that is just not the case.  I have been riding with cameras for a long time, and I can show you all kinds of video of people that are very upset about being behind me for 30 seconds, who passed me very closely, very aggressively, and then ended up sitting next to me at the red light, a block and a half up. We are not slowing you down at all and any slowdown is going to be less than 30 seconds to a minute of accumulated lost time. There is no point in putting another person’s life in danger, just because you’re in a hurry to get to the next red light.
